At the Gestational Diabetes Foundation, we believe every woman deserves quality care during pregnancy. This transformative time in a woman’s life can be physically and emotionally demanding — and for those diagnosed with gestational diabetes, it brings additional challenges that require specialised attention and support. We were founded to meet the growing need for improved maternal care, and to ensure that women everywhere have access to the support and resources they need to navigate their gestational diabetes with confidence and care.

Gestational diabetes affects an estimated 3.5% of pregnancies in the United Kingdom and approximately 14% of pregnancies globally. The burden is even greater in low-income countries, where an estimated 12.7% of pregnancies are affected by gestational diabetes. In these regions, many cases go undiagnosed and untreated due to limited access to healthcare, exacerbating risks for mothers and their babies. Without proper diagnosis and management, gestational diabetes can lead to heightened pregnancy risks and increase the long-term likelihood of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders. As diabetes rates continue to rise globally, early detection and effective management are essential to improving outcomes and protecting the health of mothers, their babies, and future generations.
